Separation Anxiety Program for Dogs
This program is included in the Behavior Modification Membership.
Dog separation anxiety is a fear of being left alone. It is similar to a panic attack.
Related behaviors may display as:
Barking/whining/other vocalizations.
Destruction of property (especially doors, windows, or exit points).
House-training accidents (urinating or defecating in the home).
Injuries (usually due to trying to break out of crates or doors).
Or other behaviors when your dog is alone.
Dogs with this condition are suffering from fear/anxiety, making this a severe behavior issue. While it is challenging to deal with, following a proper training program can resolve separation anxiety in dogs. It is a gradual process, and therefore, we work closely with dog owners to create individualized training plans (missions) multiple times per week.
Training to treat separation anxiety works best as a remote training program - where a specialist, certified separation anxiety trainer helps online with simple video technology rather than in-person meetings that can affect the dog’s perspective and training results. Typically we meet on Zoom, which is free and easy to use.
How training works:
At this time, the best available training method for resolving separation anxiety involves the owners making a contract with their dog, promising to never leave him more than he can handle, and then implementing a systematic desensitization training plan created by the trainer, specialized just for your unique dog, environment and situation. Training is designed to expand the amount of time your dog is comfortable being left alone, and decrease the need to always have someone with him.
Systematic desensitization is a method of exposing a dog to the thing that upsets or scares him at a level that does not bother/scare him, and then gradually increasing the exposures/intensity levels while still always working below a scary level - thus, helping a dog become more comfortable over time. In the case of separation anxiety, dogs are upset by alone time and triggers, things that predict they are about to be left alone.
This is a tried-and-true method that has worked in the animal training field and human psychology field - backed by both scientific studies and practical experience leading to successful outcomes.
