Regressions, Motivations, and Successes
Reminder:
Here is another reminder to go slowly - gradually build up the time your dog is comfortable being left alone - going slower in the beginning helps establish the foundation and will help your dog succeed in the long-term.
Regressions:
It’s normal to have regressions - where your dog may drop right back to the beginning of training or have a huge drop off in being comfortable with his previously achieved alone time - don’t worry, you will be able to build this back up, usually much faster this time.
Occasionally taking some days off (where there are no absences or training sessions) can help dogs’ progress jump forward as well.
Veterinary visits:
If your dog with separation anxiety behaviors needs to go to a veterinarian, groomer, or similar place, make sure ahead of time that the staff can accommodate your dog’s needs to not be left alone. Many pet professionals are more than willing to make adjustments to their normal procedure routines to help dogs be free of fear, anxiety, and stress.
Once your dog is achieving your goals:
For example, if you want to be able to drive to the nearby coffee shop, buy a drink, and take in the nice weather and scenery, once your dog has achieved enough time alone, you will be able to have this opportunity again.
Reward yourself for the success! Do something nice for yourself, and give your dog an extra tasty treat as well.
Keep Going!
Keep training until you achieve your behavior goals and help your dog become comfortable when alone. We are here to help at any time.
